Manifesto from the survivors of 6/4 on the 25th anniversary
Twenty five years ago, we launched a peaceful democratic movement in Tiananmen Square, to urge the government to start a comprehensive political reform, to allow people to have more dignity, freedom, human rights, and personal safety. This is the self-evident ideal of everyone in China. However, the Communist hardliners lead by Deng Xiaoping ordered the bloody repression of the movement, and perpetrated historical 6/4 massacre that shocked the world.
After that bloody night, China went on a path of calamity and destruction. The tanks, machine guns, dumdum bullets used on the street of Changan, cleared the path for corruption, brutality and violence; 6/4 carnage led to poisonous foods, pollution of rivers, and environmental disasters. Now, the sons and daughters of the 6/4 murderers have hijacked the authority of the government and become the corrupt power elite with astronomical wealth. They monopolized the political, economic, and cultural landscapes in China, while the vast majority of the population bears the burden and bitter fruits of the resource-depleting mode of development, without dignity or human rights.
During the last twenty five years, Chinese people went through so many cycles of hopes and dashed dreams. People once believed Deng Xiaoping’s promise that the repression was for the stability of the country, a necessary peaceful environment for the development of China. However, what people got was a lawless and brutal “stability” era; the corrupt power elite robbed and extorted, the corrupt officials pursued their insatiable greed, the officialdom was full of licentious extravagance, the business world was run on deceit and fraud, the society has become cold and heartless. Ordinary people is now under the crushing forces of “three new mountains” of education, medical care, and housing.
During the last twenty five years, Chinese people once hoped that after the economy had taken off, the country had accumulated wealth, and the Olympic had been held, that the Chinese Communist government would become more confident and tolerant, and the opportunity for reform of the constitution system would come. However, the communist party became more authoritarian and imperious, refusing to listen to mild and popular suggestions for improvements, jailing the Nobel Peace Prize laureate Liu Xiaobuo, and rejecting many universal values. On the world stage, they became more aggressive and reckless, abdicating the basic responsibility of a large country, supporting hooligan behaviors from rogue states.
During the last twenty five years, because so many people harbored such expectations and fantasies, they gave up confrontational protest of the dictatorial government, sat on the sidelines, and even abetted the rise of this despotic monster. We must realize that the existence of such a wicked and unjust regime is a ridicule to wisdom and justice of humanity; its rise will necessarily become a threat to the world peace and liberty. Delayed protests and grievous acceptance will only make the struggles more difficult and risky.
Today, after twenty five years, we can see more clearly that:
China must establish constitutional democracy;
The establishment of constitutional democracy must mean the end of corrupt autocratic rule by the communist party;
The solutions to all the problems facing China must start with re-establishment of the political order;
The new political order must start with the rectification of 6/4.
We realize at the same time, twenty five years of humiliation, hardship, and the many lost lives, have awakened Chinese people. The twenty five years of violence committed by the communist party has resulted in another scene, which is the unfolding of the popular rights movements, the generations of human rights activists, and the returns of wisdom and courage among intellectuals. The recent repression by Xi Jianping of the 6/4 commemoration is another proof that this awakening has caused so much fear in the Chinese Communist Party.
In a deeper sense, land, water sources, air, food all have poisons. It forces the wealthy elite to transfer their riches overseas, it also causes the billions of ordinary people to completely abandon this evil regime. The deterioration of the civil tradition and the disintegration of the social morals have robbed the Chinese people of hope. The outlook is dark.
If the protests by the thousands of students in Tiananmen Square twenty five years ago was for the pursuit of ideals, then every Chinese who struggles today for existence has to protest for survival. If the students of twenty five years ago used hunger strike to inspire the people of Beijing, today nothing else will move you, but grabbing of your land, dismantling of your house, robbing of your existence, embezzlement of your investment, and arrest of your son…in China, politics is acutely affecting the people’s existence more than any time in history; The relevance of the constitution system to each person is also more than any time in the past.
Does revolution really need exhortation?
Violent regime will generate its own gravediggers.
Let’s act, with siege of the world, commemorate the twenty-five-year anniversary of 6/4, and help the birth of a constitutional democracy.
