In prison he was beaten down by 4 officers.

    The police were still shouting.

Some went out to fetch sticks.

How were you taken in here?

I called over the leaders of the county,

    A big hole,
too big to be filled in.

The huge cavity that the government made
    Was beyond repair.

    Too many people died.

we visited a village of about 3,000 people.

    1,500 were selling blood.

    800 tested positive for HIV.

    Another 500 untested.

    GAO Yaojie:

    GAO Yaojie:

There’s no count of the deaths.

It leaves a gap in historical record forever.

    Interviewer:

    But why is it so?

    GAO Yaojie:

    Deaths started in the 1980s.

We didn’t know it was AIDS.

In the early `90s people were still dying.

I didn’t know it was AIDS until 1996.

More are getting HIV from blood transfusion
    than by selling blood.

This is kept from the public.

    Interviewer:

    Why?

    GAO Yaojie:

Because the local officials should be
    held responsible.

    Interviewer:

    Why do you say so?

    GAO Yaojie:

If they stopped the blood economy earlier…
I will show you some data.

It’s not just in Henan. This is national.

    Another problem is the cover-up
    of the epidemic.

They said people got HIV through drug needles.

    and finding prostitutes

    Though I don’t deny infection
    through sex or drugs.

    But these cases are primarily
    due to the blood market.

    Shifting the blame on
    to sex is discriminatory.

    It makes the public
    doubt their morality.

That’s why the patient won’t tell others.

At least two thirds of those with
HIV and AIDS won’t tell others.

At most, four fifths don’t tell.

    Interviewer:

Are you spending all your time in this?

    GAO Yaojie:

I’ve been writing and compiling since I retired.

I have made 1,020,000 copies of this booklet.

    Villagers went wild for them.

    Interviewer:

    You distribute for free?

    GAO Yaojie:

    Yes. for free.

As the books I sent to you today. No charge.

Because the villagers can’t afford it.

10 cents for one copy? Forget it!

    We reuse paper.

    You can visit me today.

5 years ago you would have been detained.

    No meals served.

If it were prof. GAO Yanning of Fudan University,

    逮住她,只给五十块钱;
there would be a 50 yuan reward.

If it were me,10 times the reward. 500 Yuan.

    Interviewer:

But what for, to keep you in?

    GAO Yaojie:

    To drive me away.

    Interviewer:

    Out of the village?

    GAO Yaojie:

    They were relieved to
    See me sent away.

They drove me away once in Weishi.

But I came back after they left.

I didn’t go back to the county center.

I headed directly to the villages.

I visited 7 villages that day,

and met with over 100 sufferers.

    Interviewer:

    You mean under each
    water tower is a village…

    CHENG Xiangyang,
    an AIDS activist from Houyang
    Village, Shangcai County

    Yeah, a village with
    a high percentage of infection.

    Shangcai County

    Interviewer:

Why are there so many graves?

    CHENG Xiangyang:

This is Houyang village. Some are
the graves of people who died of AIDS.

There are still 600 afflicated in our village.

Over 300 died in the past few years.

    CHENG Xiangyang:

The area used to be a part of Xinyang district.

It was the district where a lot of
    people died in the famine.

It was the 1960s,my father’s generation.

    CHENG Xiangyang:

    Then in 1975 the devastating
    flood hit Zhumadian.

    Memorial to the People
    who Died Fighting
in the Flood in August 1975

    CHENG Xiangyang:

It swept away thousands of people.

A lot of houses were destroyed.

    In less than 10 years,between 1975and 1980s,

The Reform and Opening policy began.

It was very inspiring to our farmers.

    We looked forward to
    rebuilding our houses.

Land was broken up and redistributed.
They were good days but not for long.

    We had to pay a
    variety of new taxes .

Just in time,a Blood Economy was started.

People were encouraged to sell blood.

In the late 1980s and early ‘90s,

nearly everyone “joined in the cause.”

There were over 400 blood banks in Henan.

    Interviewer:

How many people are in your family?

    Zhang ,a villager:

    with a girl in school

    and my parents.

    Interviewer:

    How many with HIV?

    Mr. Zhang:

    The roof is collapsing.

    We’ll have nowhere to live.

    Mr. Zhang’s wife:

News of blood selling came from Shangcai.

and loan collections were coming up.

    We couldn’t pay our loans,
we were just covering the interest.

So I sold blood and I continued to sell blood.

We did it every few days.

The 2 of us sold blood about 6 times.

Later he was tested as HIV-positive,

    then I was,too.

At that time I worked in the city.

    I didn’t see it coming.I was healthy.

Then my son checked out positive.

That scared me out of my wits.

    Mr. Li,a villager:

There are 12 infections in our village.

    3/4 are dead.

There are 9 known with HIV.

    We’re not a big village.
    3 families have already crumbled.

    One orphan wandered off.

    Interviewer:

We get a subsidy of 40 cents per day,

    12 Yuan a month.

    Glory be to God,
    Benefits to the People.

    Mr. ZHANG:

    YANG just called.

    Interviewer:

    What did he say?

    Mr. ZHANG:

    He said he’s under surveillance.

    Interviewer:

Do the village cadres know we’re here?

    Mr. ZHANG:

    Interviewer:

    So ,we aren’t going?

    Mr. ZHANG:

    对。
    Nope.

We can’t go to his place because
    somebody is watching over.

    Interviewer:

    What about our luggage?

The local government has been denying
    the AIDS outbreak.

    And it can’t get public.

They are trying to cover it up.

    Interviewer:

So you say we can’t visit DUAN Jun?

    Mr. LI:

    Definitely not!

DUAN has a tail who follows and watches.

    Interviewer:

    Can’t we go at night?

    Mr. LI:

    No. If that were possible,
I would take you there now.

    Interviewer:

    You were there yesterday?

    Mr. ZHANG:

    Interviewer:

    What did he do wrong?

    Mr. LI:

He is taking care of children from
    the infected families.

    Interviewer:

They said , no one knows
    where the kids are from.

But how kids could talk about AIDS openly.

What would that do to them?

People would look at them differently.
The kids could bear stigma into adulthhood.

People with HIV hanged themselves there.

Some jumped in front of a train

    Several just went mad.

    In that village.

    Interviewer:

    How did your father die?

    Mr. LI:

    He hung himself.
In a room in our house.

    I was tested HIV positive,and
my father saw no point to live on.

He wouldn’t do to the hospital when he was ill.

    I still consider suicide.
    I’ve no future.

I attempted suicide several times last year.

    Mr. LI:

Would you please come with us?

You see, the blood bank in our town

was authorized by the Center for Disease Control.
There’s also a Red Cross blood bank.

It was even run by the 159 military crops.

It was an open and legal practice.

They took the blood, kept the plasma,
and transfused the rest back into our bodies.

Though I didn’t know it at the time,
    that’s how I was infected.

    Mr. YANG’s wife:

When my husband was tested HIV
    positive in 2001,

he told me he had AIDS.

    I couldn’t believe it.
How could this happen to him?

    Mr. YANG:

People discriminated on those who got HIV.

    I felt so desperate,

that I bought two bottles of sleeping pills...

He said he wanted to die

I asked, what can I do without you?

    What about our kids?(how)

    Mr. YANG:

At that time one villager had just
    died of an AIDS infection.

    We were desperately…heartbroken.

We couldn’t even look at him.

    That’s when I gave up.

    and took the sleeping pills.

AIDS scared others more than anything else.

    Interviewer:

    How much did you earn
    from each blood donation?

    Mr. LI:

I paid them 3 Yuan to test my blood.

If the blood was good, it meant 45 Yuan.

45 Yuan to sell 2 bags of blood.

    Interviewer:

45 yuan for 800 cc blood?

    Mr. LI:

A little more than 800 cc.

We could hardly walk home after giving.

Many fainted on their way home.

Some couldn’t even go that far.

    Interviewer:

    They fainted while drawing blood?

    Mr. LI:

Before they could complete the drawing,

they were aided with a cup of water and a straw.

But the water couldn’t stop the trembling.

    Interviewer:

Did you have such an experience?

    Mr. LI:

    Several times.

I fainted on the road more than once.

    Interviewer:

    Did you think of quitting?

    Mr. LI:

    How could I stop?
I was counting on the money to support my family.

How could I return without money for fertilizer?

How could I find a wife without money?

    Mr. YANG:

If your interview with us is known to
    the government officials,

    there will be revenge,

    detention, constant threats,

    Mr. YANG:

or they’ll cut our medicine supply.

    Mr. YAO,a villager:

    I am infected too.

How could a blood seller expect not to be?

Back then,I had two school age children.

a family of 4 relying on 6-mu of farmland.

15 sacks of grains to pay the entire year’s taxes.

Fall short and you didn’t get any money.

But the money we received wasn’t enough.

    We needed More money ,

    but where to find it?

If I didn’t sell blood, how could I
pay taxes and support my family?

    Mr. LI:

At that time everybody here chanted:

There`s no way out in 1993.
Only our blood to sell for the tax levy.

We had to pay our taxes.

Blood donation was great,we were told.

We blood donors had our own chant:

Only a needle in my arm,
    a fifty-note in my palm.

    Before daylight broke,
I started on my way to sell blood.

    Mr. YANG’s wife:

    I was tested in 2004

I was so upset when they told me I was infected.

    I couldn’t go no living.

    I did a second check.

    When I came back home,
I told them I wished to die.

    I also took sleeping pills.

    I did it once.

    Interviewer:

It was the encouraged by the staff
    in the blood-collection station?

    Mr. LI:

It was good for the liver, I was told.

    The Health Service departments
    spent a lot on advertising.

    They went all out.

If it hadn’t been their words,
who would have thought to sell?

    Interviewer:

    DUAN cried on the phone?

    Mr. ZHANG:

    对。
    He did.

    Interviewer:

    Mr. LV,a villager:

I asked if we were being watched.

    He said yes,

    it’s a 24-hour surveillance by the government.

No right to freedom at all.

Why not just tell us what you,
    the government,expect.

A citizen is entitled to his right to freedom.

A person is no longer than a Chinese citizren
    without the right to freedom.

    Interviewer:

Are you going to petition when the
    People’s Congress is held?

    Mr. ZHAO,a villager:

    对。
    Yeah.

    Interviewer:

    to Beijing?

    Mr. ZHAO:

    Beijing.

    Interviewer:

What are you going to talk about there?

    Mr. ZHAO:

    The infections through blood transfusions.
But the hospital kept the records.

I need help from higher authorities.
Another appeal is a minimum subsidy.

    40 cents a day can’t do anything.

    Interviewer:

Panpan was not a healthy child, was she?

My granddaughter has been sick for years.

    3 or 4 years.

Panpan’s mother traveled through big cities.

    across China, like Zhengzhou, Shanghai.

to all the hospitals. She cried her eyes out.

When Panpan was in her worst condition,
and no hospital would take her in.

Her father tried to get her in
    through some connections.

    When she was finally hospitalized,
and he went around raising money.

    Interviewer:

You’ve used up your money, haven’t you?

    ZHAO, Panpan’s father:

    对。
    Yeah.

    Interviewer:

    How much did it cost?

    Panpan’s father:

    About 110,000 Yuan.

    Interviewer:

Did you find any financial aid?

    Panpan’s father:

I borrow from relatives and friends.

    Interviewer:

    You haven’t told your parents?

    Panpan’s father:

    对。
    No.

    Interviewer:

    Why haven’t you?

    Panpan’s father:

    Discrimination is huge.

I’m afraid if our neighbors found out,
my parents would be hard pressed.

    Panpan’s grandma:

One of her aunts, who settled in the South,

    sent us some money.

She mailed us expensive medicine for Panpan.

Many relatives helped us, her uncle, her aunt,

each of their families are pooling money for her.

    To support her treatment.

    It’s too hard.
I can’t tell you how hard it is.

God, please have mercy on us.

    Panpan’s aunt:

We spent our last penny on her treatment.

    We borrowed, loaned,
    tried everything in our power,

    until our house was empty.

Everyone tried hard to save her.

    Interviewer:

What was she like when she died?

    Mr.YAO:

    She was skinny and ulcerous,

and her mouth was full of chancre sores.

Unable to swallow, She starved to death.

How could one live on 40 cents a day?

    Mr.YAO a villager:

    She died in 1998.

I raise the 2 children alone.

    Mr.LV,a villager:

    Here’s another empty house.

The wife divorced the man and left.

    He took it pretty hard.

and jumped in front of a train.

    In memory of dead:
    Tears of blood fly far.

    Mr.LV:

The epidemic split up a lot of families.

Women left their families for other places.

    Some divorced.
    Some just walked off.

    His child never returned.

He died last year and was sent for
    cremation in the county center,

    unburied.

    Interviewer:

Who sent him off for cremation?

    Mr.LV:

    His brothers did.

His urn sits in his empty house.

    LI Xige
    AIDS activist and
    head of Home of Well-Being
    Ningling County

    LI Xige :

They made a barricade at the gate of
the Health Center for Women and Children.

    Interviewer:

    How many of them?

    LI Xige :

    About 20,

    all women.

Because of the Center’s negligence in
blood management from 1995 to 1999,

    LI Xige :

and an illegal blood bank inside the center,

    those doctors pursued
    their own financial interests.

    The central government issued several
    documents in 1988,

    July 20th, 1993 and March 9th, 1995

    that prohibit commercial blood collection.

But the doctors ignored the prohibitions,

    and profited from blood sales.

That’s why we have so many women with HIV.

    They blocked the gate

    to show that the doctors
    were no longer qualified.

    Health Center for Women
    and Children, Ningling County

    Interviewer:

    The gate is removed?

    LI Xige :

    Yes, it’s gone.

    Interviewer:

    No gate at all?

    LI Xige :

    None.

Then no way for the hospital staff to stop them.

    Blood-plasma collection is
    just money in their eyes.

The Bureau of Public Health is over there.

What a lousy job the CDC did.

The CDC should be the guardian
    of people’s health.

    But what a crumbling system!

    警车上传出播音:
    国务院《信访条例》

    Broadcast from police vans:

    或者将生活不能自理的人
    弃留在信访接待场所的;

    街边卖光碟的小店传出豫剧:
    Henan Opera

    一纸大状诉愤怨
Hand in an indictment full of anger

    that touches your sympathetic chord

The girl stood courageously in defiance

Your Honor, I pored over the case in and out,

no stone left unturned, I could say out loud.

    Interviewer:

    They didn’t inform you
    the meeting was canceled?

    Wardmate:

    No.I went,and found nobody there.

    Wardmate:

    The government’s full of excuses.

    The delay will kill us.

    What should we do next?

    Wardmate:

We’ve been here for 6 months,
    and only received
    400 Yuan in compensation.

    The doctor said every penny
    I spent was in vain.

    Interviewer:

    Where did you get it?

    Wardmate:

From the Health Center for Women and Children.

Go and appeal to the higher authorities?

    YU zhaoling,a villager:

    The county officials received us,

    Interviewer:

    Nothing was solved.

    YU zhaoling:

    Nothing.

    They hurried off, mouths shut.

    Somehow you can’t get answers
    from the Complaint Office.

Should I have Waited until evening
to see if I could talk with anyone?

What if I don’t make it that far?

I don’t know what to do.

    LI Xige
    AIDS activist:

They had arranged for us to
submit our complaints on the 26th.

A working day for the Complaint Office.

But when we arrived,no one was there.

    We are quite disappointed.

    Our complaining will continue.

We’ll appeal to the higher authorities.

    Henan Opera

I am the court gate facing you,

The gate opens to the south?
    Yes,to the South.

    If you have no money,
    get out of here.

    If you do have money,
    you will receive justice.

An innocent man with no money

    Lingling:

    That’s me. Me there.
    And here.

a photo of LI Xige’s family and HAO Yang, the head of the Department of Disease Control at the Ministry of Health

    Lingling:

    Those are mom and dad.

    LI Xige:

We were planning to celebrate Women’s Day,

so we made a banner to hang outside.

But we didn’t take it out.

    The police came over,

    asking what we were
    planning to do with it.

    I said,celebrate Women’s Day.

    but that wasn’t allowed.

    Interviewer:

You were under house arrest that day?

    LI Xige:

Yeah. I was confined for weeks.

    I spent my time
    disseminating information online.

    I posted news daily,

    of women under house arrest,

    and the county government’s words.

    Look at this.
38 women infected with HIV through
    blood transfusion in Ningling,

    then 9 children got HIV.

    I wrote that.

    That’s when they discovered the
internet’s coverage of the AIDS issue.

    A report from Ningling County
    this morning says,

    20 women with HIV
    petitioned for compensation,

    accusing Dr. SUN Wenling and
    Dr. HUANG Zhenrong

of unauthorized and untested plasma collection.

    and demanded they take responsibility
    for the 20 infections.

    Their husbands and children
    are also living with HIV.

    But the County Court didn’t
    accept their accusation

quoting a spoken statement that no case
is filed for HIV through blood transfusion.

    That’s how the People’s Court
    serves the people.

    Well,

    the government has got something
    against these women now.

having what they want for so long.

    These women had the wind
On their side at the beginning.

HU Jia is in the hospital now.

Well, the first thing is to get better.

We can talk more about AIDS prevention later.

He is not allowed to speak out.

    Lingling (singing):

    The world can’t...Go.

The world’s not at its best without my mom.

Who cherishes me like a gem.

When I’m cradled in her arms so dear,

happiness and joy are all that I feel.

    SUN Yingchen
    LI Xige’s daughter
    Died of AIDS.

    Zhengzhou

    Mis. LI:

A doctor broke the news to us.

He tried to explain the test report,

then he took me into an office,

and told me my son had HIV.

    My mind went blank.

    How could this happen?

He asked whether he’d had a blood transfusion.

I told him he’d had one once in Beijing,

    in Beijing’s best hospital.

    Mr.SUN:

    There are indeed concerns about
    the blood safety in Beijing.

    We have solid evidence.

    Mis. LI,Mr.SUN’s wife:

We didn’t know blood transfusion was so risky

    Mis. LI:

until it became a fatal reality.

    Interviewer:

    When was it?

    In August, 2002.

    Mr.SUN:

    The reason we’re going
    through legal procedures is

that we still believe in the rule of law.

    We ask them to inspect
    the blood safety in Beijing.

    This must be taken seriously.

My husband and I were tested, both negative.

My son is too young to be a drug-user.

If these possibilities are ruled out,
then the only source would be
    the blood transfusion.

Before the transfusion he was tested for HIV,

    and it was negative.

    Interviewer:

    Do you have proof?

    Mis. LI:

    有。
    Yes, we do.

    Mr.SUN:

    But it wasn’t considered sufficient.

    Mis. LI:

    I remember clearly

the receipt came with the HIV test report

We were asked to do the HIV test
    before the operation.

    I joked,

this test is just to make money.
How could a kid have AIDS?

Now the report works to our advantage.

    Mr.SUN:

    The first adjudication in 2003
    was not publicized.

    The Beijing authorities tried to
    restrict access by journalists.

    Delayed coverage came in 2004
    by some journalists

who pushed into the forbidden zone

arguing that restriction ended in 2003.

That’s how the media started its report in 2004.

    Blood Doubted in AIDS Infection

    An Estimated 10,000 AIDS infections
    in Beijing

    Mis. LI:

Then we received the second adjudication.

    We lost the lawsuit again.

    Interviewer:
How long did the lawsuit last?

    Mis. LI:
From December 2003 to December 2005.

    Interviewer:
Are you going to continue or give it up?

    Mr.SUN:
    As I see it,

it’s really unwise for the state to do this,

to cover up such mistakes in management
    and medical technology,

    Such adjudications,

    can’t satisfy the public.

    It discredits the judicial system.

Since we have already gone this far,

we will go on, asking for appeal,

    protesting the verdict.

The issue may involve joint efforts

of the legislative and superintending sectors.

    If the state, the government,
    and the judicial system,

    when confronted with people
    fighting for their basic rights

    play hocus-pocus

    or treat people unjustly,

    then that contradicts,

    “constructing a harmonious society.”

We are bearing the cross for society.

    If we didn’t bear this,
    someone else would.

Today it’s me. Tomorrow it’s you.

This is a disaster for all
    people of our country.

    Mis. LI:

It was in 2002 that my son had
    the blood transfusion.

    In Beijing,

in the best hospital in the nation.

If they can’t ensure safe blood,

who can ensure blood use nationwide?

    Mr.SUN:

    There were times when
    our son was hardly breathing.

    I was prepared then

for something that others wouldn’t expect.

    Interviewer:

    What was that?

    Mr.SUN:

I said if my child was dying, (think)

I would draw some blood from him into my body.

    Mis. LI:

I said, You can’t do that...

    What else could I do?

He makes less than 1000 Yuan a month.

We could hardly afford the medicine.

    We 2 stopped buying
    new clothes for 3 years.

    He’s been wearing his
    work uniform every day.

    The hospital and the blood-station
    are shifting the blame.

If they won’t take the responsibility,

then what will happen to other children?

We already live with this tragedy.

    Will a lot more come?

    Who can tell?

    Therefore we have to proceed,

    teaching them

    to admit their mistakes.

    Mr.SUN:

    I will not infect others.
But I can be infected willingly, can’t I?

If I contracted that virus, I could
feel my son living through me.

    小莉唱歌:
    Mis. LI(singing):

    蓝天和大海商量过
    Sky above and ocean blue,

    月亮就要这一个
    Cradle gently the only moon.

    爸爸和妈妈商量过
Mama and Papa’s love goes so far,

Baby you’ll be our only star.

    Interviewer:

    You’ve been packing books since
    your husband passed away?

    GAO Yaojie:

    just since 3 days ago.

I couldn’t do anything for the first few days.

    I was afraid that

I would be struck by a heart attack.

His death won’t bother me too long anyway.

    Will 11 books be enough?

    LI Xige:

I’m attending the workshop for women
living with HIV on May 9th.

    The women participants,
who were infected by blood transfusion,

come from all over the country,
    totaling 40 attendants.

I’m sending them Prof. Gao’s Ten Thousand

We’ll mail these books to HU Jia.

This paper has a hole. Can I pack with it?

    who returned from Canada
    for her father’s funeral:

    During the Cultural Revolution,

    My mother was mobbed.

She was in the street. I saw her.
The only thing that I remember is,

on her way from the hospital to the street

she was attacked from all sides.

    Mother was standing there
    surrounded by attackers.

    She was their sole target.

That afternoon she coughed up blood.
    Around 1 o’clock.

    Interviewer:

Why did you become a target in
    the Cultural Revolution?

    GAO Yaojie:

    I had 3 problems.

    One was my class problem.

    One was my profession.

I was the best gynecologist at that time.

    My crime,they said,

Was performing 100 abortions a day.

But I did as the government demanded.

    Otherwise how would I have
dared to do so many abortions?

I was labeled as a merciless killer.

    My 3 crimes were written
    On a tall pointed hat:

a diehard descendant of the landed class,

    a merciless killer,

    and a reactionist authority.

That hat was even taller than me.

Later I was forced to live in
A morgue room for 8 months.

    Interviewer:

What did you make of all this?

    GAO Yaojie:

    I didn’t want to live.
I tried to kill myself,3 times.

No one has ever asked me about that.

    You are the first.

    If you hadn’t,

    you wouldn’t understand my defiance.

    I swallowed poison,

    and 2 days later
    I regained consciousness.

I looked at my 3 children around my bed,
they were crying for their mother!

    从那以后我不死了,
    That’s when I was determined to live;

    我总有一天,把这些贪官污吏的事情给它掀起来。
    determined to reveal
    the corrupt injustice one day.

    我觉得我要死了以后我更掀不出来。
    If I died, I wouldn’t have a chance
    To speak out.

    采访者:
    Interviewer:

    我听说您跟吴仪副总理谈了四个小时
    I heard that you had a 4-hour
talk with Vice Premier Wu Yi.

    GAO Yaojie:

Not that long. It was 2 and half hours.

    Interviewer:

    What did you talk about?

    GAO Yaojie:

    2 issues.

One was the children orphaned by AIDS,

    将来会影响社会动荡;
who will be unstable in society.

    Second is the fake medicines
    and quack doctors.

    So many people couldn’t
    even afford the medicine.
    That particularly concerned her.

    She patted my shoulder,

    and asked,What should we do?

    Later, she patted me again,

and asked how to stop them.

I told her this crisis was
    because of non-action,

    and lack of in-depth investigation.

I suggested taking her to the scene.

She replied that she had no time.

    Interviewer:

    What else?

    GAO Yaojie:

    Only these 2.

I said nothing about the harassment
    from the local government.

I don’t want an eye for an eye.

    That’s too disgraceful.

    Interviewer:

You mean your son was sentenced too?

    GAO Yaojie:

    For 3 years.

    Interviewer:

    How old was he?

    GAO Yaojie:

    14.

    Interviewer:

Did you visit him in prison?

    GAO Yaojie:

Oh, no! Don’t talk about it.

    Words can’t describe it.

    That’s when I became
    sympathetic to the disadvantaged.

That’s why I risked my life
    doing this for 10 years.

We’ve been through 10 hard years.

So many people still don’t understand.

    You take these. They’re better.

    LI Xige:

    Some more packages.

    GAO Yaojie:

    Interviewer:

Prof. GAO is too frugal to even part with twine!

    GAO Yaojie:

    It’s not that I’m stingy,
I can just save it for later.

I can’t twine on the streets.

    There was some thrown away
    by the newspaper man.

Early in the morning, my husband
    went out for some twining.

You see here the twine with knots.

He collected them, and we cleaned them.

We put the twines in a bag,

now they are all gone with the mailed books,
as with my time with my husband.

When I think of my troubled times,

    I grumble to myself,
    quarrelling with my mother.

Some doubted if she was my real mother.

When I heard that, I felt really disturbed.

My husband and my child calmed me down.

How can a mother do that?

I am but an ordinary person.

    Don’t make things more difficult.

Other parents would try to please
    their children’s bosses.

Why didn’t my mother care at all
about my job in the hospital?

    As I said yesterday,

    she treats those villagers
    like family members.

I can’t explain why she is so nice to them.

As I was busy preparing meals,
    she brought them in,

    saying,Hey,they’re eating with us today.

    That’s how she is.
That’s how she was and will be.

    I don’t know.
    But for what reason?
    I don’t know.

    GAO Yaojie:

LI, help me up. My strength is gone.

    Don’t believe the lies of
    the Shangcai County chief.

    LI Xige:

    It’s not him that’s lying.

    It’s SONG Xuantao,
    the Party Secretary of Zhumadian.

I was so fed up with his lies,
    I started arguing.

    He said every patient gets
    8,000 to 10,000 Yuan a year.

    I said,No ,it’s only 10 Yuan a month.

    120 Yuan per year.

So the arguing was broadcast on the air.

    On a VOA program.

    GAO Yaojie:

There will be no place for the books after I die.

I’ll explain my plan when I return.

    DUAN Jun:

    I won’t give up, but
just do it without the name.

If I insist, I’ll be in trouble.

    Interviewer:

    What’s your plan for work?

    DUAN Jun:

I am trying to talk with the county authorities.

I want to register it as an NGO.

    To act as a bridge,

between the government and the patients.

    If the patients need anything,

it may be a voice for them to
    find aid from the above.

It may also work to gain outside resources

so that more people will be assisted.

Since AIDS is already a serious problem here,

    I’m stopping by the CDC
    to pick up some information.

    They’re open Monday to Friday,

receiving new patients nearly every day.

    Interviewer:

    How does their staff feel
    about the increase in patients?

    Terrified.

How did you find out about the Home of Caring?

    Wardmate:

    There was the large-scale
    outbreak epidemic in this area.

Many people are living with HIV.

I heard the story about Home of Caring
    from those children’s parents.

    Interviewer:

    When did his father die?

    In April.

She wanted to find another family for her son.

    Interviewer:

You are going to give up your son?

I wanted him to be adopted.

    Interviewer:

    Why?

It’s too difficult to raise a child.

    Interviewer:

Isn’t the Home of Caring a good place?

It’s much better than it was.

    My mother is also sick,

I have to stay with her at home.

It’s hard to take care of the 2.

    DUAN Jun:

Official report from our county in 2005 said

    there were nearly 600 infections.
    But now,it’s more than 700.

    That’s an alarming rate.

    Interviewer:

    What does a“home of caring”mean?

    HUA Ling:

    I think it’s a place
where people care about each other.

Do you know what a”Home of Caring”is?

    No I don’t.

    Interviewer:

Do you know you are now in the Home of Caring?

    A child:

    Yeah.

    LIN Lin:

A “home of caring” is made to care for people.

    A child:

    Have YOU done that?

    LIN Lin:

    What about you?

This boy, he should value his school time.

You know how poor his family is?

    Has he told you?

    Interviewer:

    没说

    Aunt YANG:

They still use a gas lamp.

Do know what a gas lamp is?

    Interviewer:

    How is your family now?

    JUN Hun:

My father is dying. Mom left us.

    She divorced my father.

    Aunt YANG:

    He came here bare-foot.

    JUN Hun:

Dad had no money to buy shoes for me.

prosperity and happiness for a harmonious family.

    HUA Ling:

    In my primary school years,
I remember when I was in
    elementary school,grade 2,

    my family went though
    the most difficult time.

    CHENG Xiangyang:
    CHENG Xiangyang:

It was snowing and it was late.

    We were on our way
    home from the town.

    Not a person in sight.

It was about 2 kilometers from the town,

we saw a girl by the road.

    Against a snowy sky,

she tried to stop the bus.

    HUA Ling:

My mother fell ill those days.

    Dad searched around for her.

We spent virtually everything we had.

    CHENG Xiangyang:

I asked her where she was heading.

We were heading in the same direction.

I then asked which family she was from.

    She answered,she was alone.

    HUA Ling:

My teacher kept demanding tuition fees from me.

I continued to tell her that

my family still had no money.

    CHENG Xiangyang:

    I asked her father’s name.

She said she had no father.

What about your mother, I asked later.

    No mother, she said.

Then I knew her parents were both dead.

She was just a child, 14 year old.

I asked who she lived with.

I live by myself. She said.

    HUA Ling:

    When my mother died,

    I was about ten.
    Old enough to understand.

    CHENG Xiangyang:

She was carrying a plastic bag in her hands.
In it, there were 4 ice-cold steamed buns.

and the 4 pieces of buns were for 2 days.

    Mr.SUN:

The Party Secretary of Zhumadian City

    must be removed from post.

    Interviewer:

    Why must he?

    Mr.SUN:

He lied that each patient with HIV

is granted a national relief of
    8,000-10,000 Yuan.

He even went on to say that
    some patients were being greedy.

    Let’s put aside whether
    people really get that much,

But what do you mean by
    greedy for milk powder?

    How could an official at
such a high rank be so shameless?

    6 year old kids have
    never tasted milk powder,

Is that the achievement of your time in power?

Premier Wen said he hopes that
every person can receive 500 grams of milk per day.

    HUA Ling:

My dad was away at work.

I stayed in, trying to cook.

    As he returned,

he would be glad to see

    the meals were ready.

    He commended,Even though
you’ve still got a lot to figure out,

Dad knows you’re a good girl,

And that helps me a lot.

That’s when my cooking got better and better.

I believed I could prepare meals for my Dad.

    I was so happy.

    CHENG Xiangyang:

    It wasn’t until 9 o’clock
that we arrived at the village.

    Her house was really big,

with a small bed in 1 of the rooms.

    She was the family.

    Some steamed buns left over
in the bowls on the table.

    What else?
    Sliced white radishes.

And 3 pieces of steamed buns on the table.

    LIN Lin:

The food here is much better
than just eating steamed buns at home.
    10 times better.

    JUN Hun:

The worst was there were no
meals to go with the buns.

    CHENG Xiangyang:

    On a small bed,

you couldn’t tell what color the
    bedding was.They were messy.

    Henan Opera

    To manage state affairs,

Tens of millions of Yuan were involved.

County Treasurer seat for 400,000 Yuan
Head of the Hospital seat for 300,000 Yuan...

    CHENG Xiangyang:

I asked her what she did in town.

She said she went there to remit money to her elder brother

Her brother is 16, an immiigrant worker.

But he couldn’t find any job. No money left,

    he was stranded somewhere.

She remitted 300 yuan to him.

I asked her where the money was from.

She told me she sold the beans.

I asked how she she liveds day by day.

She said she livesd by selling beans.

And now there’s no beans left.
