    《'Drug lord' charmed our politicians》

    By Tony Vermeer
    July 06, 2008 12:00am

UNTIL he was arrested over one of Australia's biggest cocaine hauls, Frank Hu was a political operator whose contacts and influence appeared to reach to the very top in Australia and China.
The Sydney businessman boasted of his links to Chinese President Hu Jintao, was photographed with John Howard and cultivated dozens of federal MPs, although well-known Sinophile Kevin Rudd was silent yesterday on whether he was one of them.
Hu's company, the Australia-China International Exchange Centre, ran information sessions for MPs in Parliament House and organised visits to China for parliamentary delegations, which included meetings with senior Communist Party officials.
On one such visit in 2003 Hu, also known as Hu Yang, was pictured beaming with the Chinese president as he met a parliamentary delegation led by Liberal MP Judi Moylan in Beijing, which also included the current Speaker, Harry Jenkins.
"I checked him out as best as you can,'' Ms Moylan said last week. "He certainly was very well connected to the relevant organisations.''
Hu worked closely with Chinese foreign affairs and propaganda officials, bringing troupes of Chinese artists and performers to Australia to perform at venues such as the Sydney Opera House in the name of cultural understanding.
So successful was Hu that he was given an award by the Chinese consulate in Sydney for his "outstanding contributions'' and scored an invitation to Communist China's 50th anniversary celebrations in Beijing's Tiananmen Square. Chinese television even made a documentary about him.
But it all came crashing down on March 11 when police swooped on the 50-year-old as he left a Sydney hospital where his girlfriend, for whom he left his wife last year, was to give birth to their first child.
Investigators with a joint NSW-Federal Police squad alleged that, while Hu was rubbing shoulders with the powerful, he was also masterminding an $87 million cocaine importation racket.
Officers seized 250 kilos of the drug inside boxes of green tea imported from China and sent to an Auburn warehouse.
Two women were also arrested in the operation - a Tax Office staffer, Yue Mae, 25, of Allawah, and Dan Ning Wang, 28, of Rockdale.
Wang was accused of unloading and storing the drug shipment, Sutherland Local Court heard.
The Sunday Telegraph has been told Wang has high-level contacts in the Chinese military.
All were charged with importing and attempted possession of a commercial quantity of cocaine, which - if they are convicted - could see them face life jail terms. Hu has been denied bail and is due in court on July 16.
In China, prospects are worse for four men arrested by local authorities for their part in the operation.
They face the death penalty if convicted in local courts.
Hu's arrest shocked Ms Moylan, chair of the Australia/China Parliamentary Friendship Group, who said he was well-known to federal MPs through his Chinese information nights.
Others on the 2003 trip included Labor MPs Janice Crosio, John Murphy, Frank Mossfield, Harry Quick and Sid Sidebottom and Liberal Geoff Prosser. Mr Rudd's office yesterday failed to respond to questions about Mr Hu.

"He used to be pretty active on both sides around the parliament,'' Ms Moylan said of Hu.
"He hosted a number of events for interested members as I recall.
"The visits he was involved with were well-run.
"My recollection is that he came across as a very savvy sort of businessman.''
But she disputes claims made by his alma mater, Beijing Normal University, that he organised her meeting with Hu Jintao in November 2003.
A university document, translated by The Sunday Telegraph, says the Sydney businessman Hu met for more than an hour with the president and "reported to President Hu the effective work done in the areas of Australia-China international trade and cultural and educational exchanges''.
"President Hu expressed his appreciation for the achievements of the Centre of Australia-China International Exchange and other Chinese associations in regard to entering the mainstream society of Australia, and their active engagement in bilateral exchange work.''
Hu allegedly came to the attention of police when he transferred a large amount of money to a Chinese bank account in January this year.
When the joint police team began investigations into the money trail, it discovered more than $1 million had been sent overseas.
In Sydney, at 2.40am on February 1 this year, according to court documents, Hu allegedly handed over almost $1.57 million to a 33-year-old man, who was arrested shortly after.
Later that month, police alleged in Central Local Court, Hu handled a further $1.34 million, allegedly knowing that it was cash from drug deals.
Federal legal officers have since acted to "freeze'' assets worth as much as $2 million, mainly linked to Hu, in Australia and China.
Included is the Hurstville penthouse unit where Hu lived, bought by his girlfriend for $420,000 - without a mortgage - last Christmas.
The property seizure reportedly included two Campsie units where Hu and his wife used to live, as well as up to $500,000 in bank accounts linked to Hu, and a Rockdale house owned by Dan Wang.
Beijing-born Hu is a physics graduate who was in Australia studying at the time of the Tiananmen Square massacre in 1989.
He was one of 40,000 Chinese granted residency by a tearful Bob Hawke in the aftermath, but seemed to bear no malice towards the Chinese government and soon began seeking out business opportunities.
Dissidents disapproved when he organised a Chinese government-backed cultural event at Sydney Opera House in 2006 on June 4, the anniversary of the massacre in Tiananmen Square.
Former Sydney Chinese consulate official Chen Yonglin, who dramatically defected in 2005, recalled that Hu boasted to Chinese authorities about his influence in Australia.
"He worked very closely (with the consulate),'' Mr Chen said. "He was valued because he established relations with top politicians and officials, then he would get privileges and connections to do other business.''
Mr Chen, who has since become a human rights campaigner, said Hu's arrest had been hushed up in Sydney's Chinese community because of the potential to embarrass the Chinese government.
However, a rogue website - boxun.com - based in the US, had been running stories by an anonymous citizen journalist about his links with Hu Jintao.
Hu and his wife set up their company 12 years ago, but ASIC records show Hu's wife quit the firm in October last year, around the time their marriage was falling apart.
The company office on the sixth floor of a building in Castlereagh St in Sydney is just 200 metres from the headquarters of the AFP, which raided it in March.
The office formerly housed the Sydney offices of China's government-owned television network.
The Sunday Telegraph found it deadlocked and unoccupied last week. [博讯首发,转载请注明出处]- 支持此文作者/记者(博讯 boxun.com)
